McGuireWoods’ Milton Cerny Appointed to Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities
May 24, 2012
McGuireWoods LLP announced today that Milton Cerny, counsel in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, has been
appointed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to serve on the Advisory
Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities (ACT). His term is effective
June 1, 2012.
The ACT serves as a forum for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and public
representatives who deal with employee plans, tax exempt organizations, tax
exempt bonds, and federal, state, local and Indian tribal governments. The ACT
allows the IRS to receive regular input on administrative policy and procedures
of the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division (TE/GE). The Exempt
Organizations Committee has six members who serve two-year terms.
“I am honored that the Department of the Treasury has entrusted me with this
responsibility,” Cerny said. “The tax policies and regulations in this area are
more complex than they have ever been and I am looking forward to contributing
to the advisory committee.”
Cerny advises a range of domestic and international nonprofit organizations,
including hospitals, private foundations, universities, public charities, and
trade associations on tax planning issues and the application of the federal tax
code. He advises on large case and team audits regarding tax controversies
before the IRS, and compliance with federal requirements on governance and
private foundation rules.
He previously served at the National Office of the IRS in a number of
management positions including technical advisor to the assistant commissioner
of the Employee Benefits and Tax Exempt Organization, where he was responsible
for issuing private letter rulings and advising field offices on tax
controversies.
