Business Lawyering in the Innovation Economy: New Business Models + More Regulation = Opportunities and Challenges for Company Counsel

September 7-8, 2018

For the fifth time, Steve Keeler (Partner, Charlottesville) planned and co-chaired the Virginia State Bar’s Advanced Business Law Conference. This year’s conference was held September 7 and 8, 2018 and entitled “Business Lawyering in the Innovation Economy: New Business Models + More Regulation = Opportunities and Challenges for Company Counsel.” Steve co-chaired the introductory panel with Ed Albrigo, the CEO of the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT). They discussed the evolution of the economy through various revolutions culminating in the “fourth” revolution brought about by artificial intelligence, the internet-of-things, and big data. They also foreshadowed the conference’s coverage of third-party outsourcing and international business trends.

Keeler and Brent Justus (Partner, Richmond) serve on the Board of Governors of the Virginia State Bar’s Business Law Section. Rod Satterwhite (Partner, Richmond) made a presentation on trade secret litigation Rob Wasinger (McGuireWoods Consulting) provided a legislative/regulatory update at this year’s conference. Other McGuireWoods partners, including Tom Spahn, have participated as speakers in past conferences.
