McGuireWoods has a longstanding higher education practice that includes a former Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Education and a former state Secretary of Education. Our higher education attorneys represent public and private colleges and universities, including for-profit, career colleges. We also represent banks, lenders and education consulting companies with issues relating to student lending. This representation includes statutory and regulatory compliance and investigation work relating to the Higher Education Act of 1965 and the federal student aid programs.

We have assisted colleges with issues relating to NCAA investigations, faculty tenure, financing expansion, low-income housing, 501(c)(3) and other tax issues, student lending compliance and investigations, and intellectual property issues.

Other key areas of our higher education practice involve student and academic issues, housing, governance and endowment management and construction.
