Ms. Peyton chairs the firm’s Intellectual Property, Data and Privacy Practice Group, one of five practice groups in the Technology and Business Department. Her practice includes transactional work in the areas of intellectual property protection and licensing, protection of data and compliance with privacy law.
She has substantial experience assisting clients with trademark risk assessment, registration, maintenance, licensing, copyright registration, publishing agreements, trade secret issues, and technology licenses. She has prosecuted hundreds of trademark applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and manages sizable U.S. and foreign portfolios for retail, manufacturing, and professional services companies.
Ms. Peyton also has significant experience with software licensing and transfers of intellectual property in corporate transactions, as well as the negotiation and drafting of transition services agreements to support IT and other functions in the post-transaction transition period. She has experience as a website audit team leader, auditing and evaluating clients' websites for intellectual property protection and liability issues, and drafting appropriate privacy policies and legal terms and conditions for web pages. Her website audit clients include public and private corporations, institutions of higher learning, and other nonprofit organizations.
Ms. Peyton has substantial experience assisting clients with developing and implementing standard contract drafting and administration policies for supply chain and sourcing departments. Her work with clients and industry groups has focused on educating supply chain personnel about the impact of legal terms. Her work in this area helps clients avoid costly omissions while improving productivity by reducing the need for legal review in many cases.
In addition to serving as a practice group chair, Ms. Peyton also serves as vice chair of the firm’s Women’s Leadership Forum. She is active in the Virginia State Bar as a member of the faculty of the mandatory Professionalism Course, and is chair-elect of the Intellectual Property Section. She was recognized as one of Virginia’s "Legal Elite" by Virginia Business magazine in 2005 and 2006, and named a 2007 Virginia "Rising Star" by Richmond magazine.
