Mr. Shapiro advises clients on a wide range of employment-related issues, including wrongful discharge, employment discrimination, and virtually all aspects of the employer-employee relationship. He has experience litigating cases under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. § 1981, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Labor Management Relations Act, as well as various tort, contract and state law claims. He also represents employers in responding to administrative charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Mr. Shapiro also represents employers nationwide in federal and state OSHA matters. This includes counseling employers on compliance with safety and health standards, assisting them in responding to onsite OSHA inspections, and representing companies in enforcement actions before both federal OSHA and state OSHA agencies. He has lectured and trained employers on OSHA compliance and enforcement issues. He has also represented employers before the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Mr. Shapiro's practice also focuses on construction litigation and bid protests, including the representation of design professionals, general contractors, and some sub and specialty contractors.
He has extensive litigation experience at the trial and appellate levels. Prior to joining McGuireWoods, he tried more than 100 cases (bench and jury), and argued more than 50 appeals in the Virginia Supreme Court and Virginia Court of Appeals. Mr. Shapiro was selected as a Virginia "Rising Star" in employment litigation by Law & Politics magazine in 2007.
