Mr. Cairns is a trial lawyer, who for more than 25 years has represented clients in a broad range of employment, tort, and commercial litigation in trial and appellate courts across the United States. He represents employers in discrimination and harassment cases under federal and state laws. He represents employers, benefit plans and plan administrators in litigation under ERISA. He represents public employers litigating Constitutional issues. He handles class actions under Rule 23 and opt-in claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

He has litigated a variety of commercial litigation matters including theft of trade secrets, breach of non-competition agreements, shareholder and partnership litigation involving claims of breaches of fiduciary duty and other corporate governance issues, fraud in the sale of real property and securities, insurance coverage, and other contract issues.

Mr. Cairns counsels clients in high-exposure toxic tort, product liability and personal injury matters and has litigation and trial experience in these matters across the country.

He counsels clients concerning issues associated with their mergers, acquisitions and layoffs; the drafting of employment agreements, non-competition agreements and related employment policies; as well as investigation of sexual harassment claims, preparation of affirmative action plans, and OFCCP audits. He also counsels on traditional labor issues under both the National Labor Relations Act and the Railway Labor Act, such as union campaigns, contract negotiations, labor disputes and defense of unfair labor practice charges.
