In 1985, we were the first major law firm to locate in Tysons Corner – an area that is now the commercial center of Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia comprise the Washington metropolitan area, the fourth largest metro economy in the United States, which boasts a population of almost 6 million; a median household income among the highest in the country; the highest employment growth in the nation over the last 20 years; and an educated workforce, including the largest percentage of adults with an advanced degree.

Of course, the federal government is an important force in the local economy. But as the region has grown, it has become less dependent on the government. In 1982, the federal government employed 21 percent of the total area workforce. Today that percentage has been cut in half. Expansion in industries like technology and healthcare has created a more diversified and healthier economy.
