One of McGuireWoods’ core values is commitment to our communities. We feel it isn’t enough merely to do our work and go home at the end of the day. As one of the nation’s largest law firms, we want to give back to the communities in which we live and work.

Our Atlanta and Chicago offices have launched a project allowing us to give back to members of the clergy who have given so much of themselves. “Thy Will Be Done” is McGuireWoods’ initiative to offer a free basic will and testament, appropriate health care directives and related financial powers to any full-time, licensed clergy member of any faith, denomination or belief in the Atlanta and Chicago metropolitan areas.

Without a will, heirs may be left to deal with legal issues that are perplexing and tedious while they are simultaneously grieving. In addition, unintended consequences often result in the absence of a valid will. While our program doesn’t include complicated tax planning, clergy can establish a basic estate planning document and directive for health care decisions and financial powers, should they become disabled.

After signing an engagement letter, participants fill out a questionnaire (available below) that is used by our lawyers in drafting these documents. Additional information may be requested. Once our lawyers complete the documents, participating clergy will visit one of our offices to have remaining questions answered, have the documents properly executed, and be given original copies to keep in a secure place.

At no cost or obligation, we invite full-time, licensed and ordained members of the clergy Atlanta and Chicago to participate.
