Overview

A client looks to outside counsel for results. What separates one firm from another is the way it seeks, and whether it achieves, those results. McGuireWoods' Government, Regulatory and Criminal Investigations (GRCI) Department – composed of the SEC enforcement defense, white collar, internal investigations and international fraud/anti-corruption practice groups – has a track record of successful outcomes for clients in some of the most difficult and serious circumstances they have faced. We are focused on scalable, responsive approaches to clients’ issues that yield the best possible results for their businesses.

Depth of experience is the key. Our attorneys have extensive experience conducting audits, investigations and training throughout the United States and around the world, to resolve internal issues, defend external investigations, and establish and strengthen compliance programs.

We draw on the experience of our former prosecutors and regulators from numerous government agencies, but more importantly, we have a proven track record of achieving the results clients seek across substantive areas including FCPA, environmental enforcement, immigration enforcement, SEC and corporate compliance, internal investigations, False Claims Act, qui tam, congressional ethics and other inquiries. Our success is due in part to the fact that our attorneys know how to think like – and they have credibility with – federal and state prosecutors and regulators.

Our GRCI lawyers regularly represent corporate and individual clients facing internal audits or investigations; corporate compliance investigations; grand jury investigations; and other regulatory, administrative and criminal investigations.

In addition, GRCI attorneys work closely with the firm’s other practice groups and our subsidiary McGuireWoods Consulting LLC for additional substantive expertise, with the goal of preventing regulatory, law enforcement and internal inquiries and issues from becoming government investigations or criminal prosecutions. To that end, we regularly conduct internal investigations and audits, advise clients regarding establishing and overseeing compliance programs, and provide training to clients’ employees regarding all of the above issues.

Our GRCI attorneys have particular experience in investigations involving large volumes of documents, and they work closely with attorneys in our dedicated Discovery Counsel Services (DCS) practice. DCS's written protocols for interviewing, collecting, reviewing, analyzing and producing millions of pages of documents have resulted in best practices for the discovery phase of government inquiries and complex litigation that have been repeatedly tested and refined through application.
