Sustainability & McGuireWoods
For over two decades our attorneys have been working on green projects, assisting sustainable initiatives and helping clients around the country focus on the sustainable “triple bottom line”: environment, economy and equity.
With an interdisciplinary core group of sustainability attorneys and seamless access to the Firm’s resources worldwide, McGuireWoods’ Sustainability Practice offers support across the full spectrum of public and private needs relating to sustainability. Moreover, with the added support of our Climate Change Group, the knowledge of alternative energy issues from our Energy Policy Group, and the technical experience from the worldwide offices of our sister company, McGuireWoods Consulting, we can address every issue of sustainable and restorative development from multiple, creative angles.
For years McGuireWoods has been one of the premier law firms for anyone involved in sustainable development. Our attorneys in this practice group are highly regarded within the green community, and our Firm is involved in some of the nation’s best-known green projects. This depth and breadth of experience sets us apart. The launch of our Sustainability Practice builds upon our existing strengths and reinforces the interconnections across practice areas. These areas include:
- Energy and utilities
- Design and construction
- Real estate
- Manufacturing
- Land use
- Monetization of energy and other resources
- Historic preservation and land conservation
- Corporate and civic responsibilities and opportunities
- Public and private finance
- Tax-exempt organizations
Walking the Walk
In addition to representing some of the most innovative localities, businesses and developers pursuing sustainable solutions, we provide legal support for an array of world changing non-profits. We have represented the U.S. Green Building Council for a decade, and the Congress for the New Urbanism and the World Green Building Council since they were created. We have attorneys on the boards of the Form-Based Codes Institute, the Green Infrastructure Foundation, the National Charrette Institute, and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities as well as numerous other organizations around the country.
McGuireWoods seeks more sustainable operations as well. Our Los Angeles and Washington DC offices are in LEED certified buildings. Through the efforts of our Sustainable Operations Team, McGuireWoods is participating in the American Bar Association and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s joint program, called the ABA-EPA Law Office Challenge – which is designed to encourage law offices to take meaningful and practical steps to become better environmental and energy stewards.
