Multinational automaker

Defense at trial of a multinational automaker in wrongful death case tried in Bamberg County, South Carolina. Plaintiff was the personal representative of the estate of Benjamin Riley. Riley was the long-serving and popular sheriff of nearby Jasper County, S.C. He was killed in a rollover accident involving a 1998 Ford F-150. In closing arguments after a nine-day trial, plaintiff’s counsel asked the jury to return a $10 million to $40 million verdict including compensatory and punitive damages. After deliberating two hours, the jury returned a $300,000 verdict.
