Sarah Thompson Writes Article on Employer Preparations for GDPR

October 13, 2017

Employee Benefits published an Oct. 10 article by McGuireWoods London associate Sarah Thompson on how employers can prepare for the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.

In the article, Thompson stressed the need for departments in the business — such as HR, Legal, IT and Compliance — to work together to understand the new obligations and how they will impact the organization. Specifically, HR needs to be concerned with data auditing and mapping; processing employee personal data; privacy notices; and third-party processors.

“It is now only six months before the GDPR becomes law and it is already too late for those employers that have not yet started their compliance efforts. With fines of up to €20 million or 4% of annual worldwide turnover, whichever is greatest, at stake, this requires immediate board level attention and stakeholder buy-in,” Thompson wrote.
