Bloomberg Quotes Elliot Katz on Autonomous Vehicle Regulations

August 29, 2017

San Francisco partner Elliot Katz, chair of McGuireWoods’ connected and automated vehicle practice, was quoted in an Aug. 24 Bloomberg story about forthcoming changes to U.S. auto safety regulations to address driverless cars.

In the article, titled “Driverless Cars of the Future Confront Rules Written for Drivers,” Katz noted, “the basic problem here is one we’ve seen in a lot of industries: the technology moves a lot quicker than the regulation.”

As automakers race to deploy self-driving vehicles within the next decade, the industry is pushing regulators to update dozens of safety standards relating to human drivers, according to the Bloomberg article. Katz said, “Unfortunately, the rulemaking process is not a short one, not a cheap one and is nothing short of labor intensive.”
