Law360 Quotes Elliot Katz on New Self-Driving Cars Legislation

August 15, 2017

San Francisco partner Elliot Katz, chair of McGuireWoods’ connected and automated vehicle practice, was quoted in an Aug. 11 Law360 story about federal legislation shielding automakers from conflicting state regulations on self-driving cars.

The SELF DRIVE Act, passed by the House of Representatives on July 27, clarifies federal and state governments’ oversight of the industry while updating the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to account for the quickly evolving automated vehicles sector.

In the article, Katz commented, “Our current patchwork of state laws is completely unworkable [because] driving is an inherent interstate activity, and automakers don’t make cars to be driven only in California or only in Arizona or only in New York.”

He added that “lifting the cap on exemptions is really important to get these vehicles on the road and provides economic incentives for vehicle manufacturers to continue on this path.”

The article, “Feds Plan to Take the Wheel on Self-Driving Cars,” is available online to subscribers.
