Richmond senior counsel Nathan Kottkamp recently appeared on Charlottesville, Virginia, radio station WINA to discuss National Healthcare Decisions Day, an annual advocacy campaign, now in its 11th year, that educates the public and healthcare providers about the importance of advance care planning.
Kottkamp, a member of McGuireWoods’ healthcare practice, is the founder and chair of the initiative. National Healthcare Decisions Day is April 16.
“Regardless of our age, regardless of our current healthcare status, this is something that all adults need to be thinking about, not just when they are older or have a health condition,” Kottkamp explained during an April 2 interview on the “Charlottesville Right Now” program.
“The concept of an advance directive also includes designating a healthcare power of attorney or an agent, somebody who will stand in your shoes and speak for you when you cannot speak for yourself,” he added.
