McGuireWoods Partner Joy Fuhr Receives High Honor from National Association of Women Lawyers

July 16, 2015

McGuireWoods partner Joy Fuhr has been honored by the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) with the Virginia S. Mueller Outstanding Member Award for her contributions to the organization. Fuhr received the award Thursday, July 16 during NAWL’s annual meeting and awards luncheon in New York.

Based in the firm’s Richmond office, Fuhr is national chair of the McGuireWoods Women Lawyers Network and is a member of the firm’s Board of Partners and its Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Her national litigation practice focuses on defending commercial, public nuisance, environmental, toxic tort and product liability claims. In selecting Fuhr for the award, NAWL cited her work chairing committees for the organization’s annual and mid-year meetings and her efforts to recruit new volunteers and members.

The Virginia S. Mueller Outstanding Members Award is named after the Sacramento, California lawyer who worked tirelessly to advance the position of women in the legal profession. Mueller has practiced law for more than half a century and, in 1959, became the first female deputy in the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

“It’s a tremendous honor to receive an award named for a true trailblazer and role model like Virginia Mueller,” Fuhr said. “The National Association of Women Lawyers has done so much in its long history to promote the advancement of women in the legal profession and I’m proud to be a member of this organization.”

The National Association of Women Lawyers is a professional organization devoted to promoting the interests of women lawyers and women's rights. Founded in 1899, long before most local and national bar associations admitted women, NAWL provides leadership opportunities, a collective voice and essential resources to advance women in the legal profession and advocate for the equality of women under the law.

“We know how valuable Joy’s leadership is to McGuireWoods and how fortunate we are to have such a strong role model leading our Women Lawyers Network,” said Jackie Stone, chair of the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. “Joy brings that same energy and dedication to her service with NAWL, and we’re proud that she has received this well-deserved honor.”
