McGuireWoods’ Melissa Martinez Named Maryland Daily Record ‘VIP’

August 21, 2015

Melissa Martinez, an associate in McGuireWoods’ Baltimore office, has been named to the Maryland Daily Record’s 2015 VIP list, which honors professionals age 40 and younger for their professional achievements and community involvement. Martinez and her fellow honorees are profiled in a special magazine inserted into the Aug. 21, 2015 edition of the Daily Record.

Martinez’s law practice focuses on intellectual property litigation, business litigation, business torts, and contractual disputes. She has experience in trial and appellate matters and in handling complex patent litigation involving consumer electronics, computer systems, GPS and wireless technology.

Martinez was an integral member of a McGuireWoods team that, in 2013, secured the largest-ever reversal of monetary damages handed down by a Maryland court – more than $1.5 billion in damages assessed against an oil company in two cases stemming from a 2006 underground gasoline leak at a service station in the state.

Martinez is president of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Maryland. She also is active in supporting underprivileged communities in the Baltimore area through pro bono service and volunteer work. Among her community betterment efforts, Martinez mentors inner-city students through Adelante Latina, a nonprofit after-school program that helps Latina students prepare for college.

“Melissa’s excellence in serving clients and her tireless work in the community exemplify her exceptional professional and civic leadership” said Ava Lias-Booker, managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Baltimore office. “We are tremendously proud of her and very delighted to see her receive this well-deserved honor.”

This is the second time in the last three years that the Daily Record has recognized Martinez for her career accomplishments and community involvement. She was named to the Daily Record’s Leading Women list in 2013.

“I’m grateful for this recognition and humbled to be included in a group that includes so many accomplished, community-minded individuals,” Martinez said.
