McGuireWoods Honored by Page Turners for Support Of Childhood Literacy Programs in Atlanta Area

June 29, 2016

Page Turners Make Great Learners, a nonprofit dedicated to improving childhood literacy in the metro Atlanta region, honored McGuireWoods for the firm’s longstanding support of the organization during its June 16 fundraising gala.

McGuireWoods received a Spirit Award for the involvement of the firm’s lawyers and staff in read-a-thons, book drives and other literacy events. Angela Spivey, managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Atlanta office, accepted the award at the gala.

This year’s honorees also included Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal and former University of Georgia football star Malcolm Mitchell, a recent draft pick of the New England Patriots, among others. Award-winning children’s book author Carmen Agra Deedy gave the keynote speech.

Page Turners was founded in 2003 by FeFe Handy, a practice assistant with McGuireWoods’ Atlanta office who serves as the organization’s president. The firm was a sponsor of the 2016 gala, which raised money to expand Page Turners’ programs.

“Page Turners does so much to inspire children to discover the joy of reading and we are honored to support such an important community initiative,” Spivey said. “We’re also tremendously proud of FeFe for her leadership of Page Turners and her commitment to expanding childhood literacy.”

“We are grateful to McGuireWoods and all of the organizations and individuals who support Page Turners to help make our programs a success,” Handy said.

Page Turners provides thousands of metro Atlanta students with books and programs, such as youth book clubs. The organization served more than 2,500 students enrolled in Title I schools this academic year and donated more than 2,000 books to inspire a love of reading in children.
