The National Law Journal Honors McGuireWoods’ Michael Adams as a 2017 Cybersecurity Trailblazer

November 2, 2017

McGuireWoods partner Michael Adams has been honored by The National Law Journal in its 2017 Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Trailblazers issue, which recognizes leading lawyers combating criminal cyber threats and strengthening data security.

A retired Navy commander, Adams joined McGuireWoods in February after serving as a top legal adviser to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as a national security point person on cyber threats. Based in the firm’s Charlotte office, Adams advises clients on cybersecurity, data privacy and technology issues across industries, including emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, unmanned and autonomous systems, and biometrics.

In its profile of Adams, The National Law Journal noted that he has helped the firm rewrite its methodology for addressing data privacy and security issues. “We built a 24/7 crisis response team that has already responded to what may have been the most complex disclosure of high-value information in history,” Adams told the magazine.

Adams also discussed working on data security, intelligence and technology as deputy general counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He developed a legal and policy framework to address emerging cyber threats and was a key military adviser in significant U.S. cyber events, including North Korea’s 2014 hacking of Sony Pictures.

Adams said he expects cyberattacks to become more sophisticated and clashes between privacy and security to persist. Eventually, he said, “there will need to be a fundamental rethinking of law as it relates to the cyber domain."

Corporate counsel rated McGuireWoods as a leading cybersecurity law firm in a report published this year by BTI Consulting Group. McGuireWoods was recognized for “proactively taking a ground-up approach” to helping clients avoid and manage threats to their businesses, supply chains and customers, and advising them on compliance with emerging laws and guidelines.
