Press Release

Daniel Goldfried, Former Bank Counsel and SEC Enforcement Lawyer, Joins McGuireWoods in N.Y.

March 9, 2017

Daniel A. Goldfried has joined McGuireWoods’ nationally recognized Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation Department as a partner in New York, bringing a decade of experience managing high-profile investigations for Bank of America and its legacy entities. His practice focuses on securities compliance and enforcement matters.

Since 2009, Goldfried was an assistant general counsel in Bank of America’s regulatory inquiries group and he held a similar role at Merrill Lynch & Co. prior to its merger with Bank of America. He represented the bank and its employees in probes by domestic and international regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Justice Department, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The matters involved fixed-income securitization, underwriting, insider trading, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, anti-money laundering rules and retail brokerage issues, among others.

From 2003 to 2007, Goldfried was senior counsel at the SEC, where he led major investigations into mutual fund market timing, hedge fund insider trading, market manipulation of corporate bonds and insurer financial fraud.

Goldfried’s arrival follows last year’s additions of New York partners Ghillaine Reid, William E. Goydan, John Lukanski and Kiran Somashekara, who also focus on regulatory enforcement matters. In addition, Alexandra Villarreal O’Rourke, a former CFPB senior counsel, joined McGuireWoods last month and is based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Dan is a seasoned litigator whose experience on both sides of significant government investigations provides tremendous insight to our financial institution clients,” said Noreen Kelly, managing partner of the firm’s New York office and chair of the Financial Institutions Industry Team.

“Dan has excelled in managing the kind of high-exposure government investigations that have touched every bank on Wall Street, and that experience enhances our considerable capabilities in this area,” said John Adams, chair of the firm’s Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation Department.

“McGuireWoods is a leader in government investigations and regulatory enforcement matters, particularly in the financial services industry, and I’m excited to work with such a talented team,” Goldfried said.

McGuireWoods is ranked in 2016’s GIR 100, a guide to the world’s top cross-border investigations practices based on independent research by Global Investigations Review. In addition, Law360 honored the firm as a White Collar Practice Group of the Year and as a “Litigation Powerhouse” for outstanding U.S. and international work, including financial services, government investigations and white collar litigation.
