Bernard serves as a managing director of the McGuireWoods Capital Group and is of counsel with McGuireWoods LLP. His focus with the Capital Group is on merger and acquisition advisory services, as well as consulting with clients in various areas of business performance enhancement. His legal practice has concentrated on mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate issues.

Bernard is a former executive vice president of United Dominion Industries, a $2.4 billion New York Stock Exchange company. He joined the company in 1989 and became general counsel in 1993. He subsequently held a number of operating positions at United Dominion, including the presidency of its Door Products Division located in Nashville, Tennessee, and as president of its Building Products, Specialty Engineered Products, and Test Instrumentation Segments. Prior to joining United Dominion, he practiced law for 16 years in Charlotte, North Carolina with a law firm that subsequently merged with McGuireWoods LLP.

In 1992, Bernard completed the Advanced Management Program at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.
