Doug focuses his practice on business litigation, representing business clients in a variety of shareholder, banking, regulatory, products liability, and commercial litigation matters. In October 2005, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. An active leader in the community and bar, Doug lectures regularly on litigation and professional responsibility topics. Chambers and Partners' 2012 Chambers USA Client Guide describes Doug as" a highly experienced litigator and arbitrator who, according to one source, 'deserves to be at the top of any list.'" Doug became General Counsel of McGuireWoods in July 2013.

Representation of worldwide chemical manufacturer BASF Corporation in an antitrust action in which the plaintiffs alleged a vertical price-fixing conspiracy regarding sales of a chemical product and sought certification of a nationwide class. Trial court granted BASF's motion for summary judgment, and the 4th Circuit affirmed, Budget Pest Prevention, Inc., et al v. Bayer Corporation, et al, 561 F. 3d 282 (2009).

Representation of nominal defendant Duke Energy Corporation and several of its current directors in a shareholder derivative action in North Carolina Business Court, which arose from Duke's 2006 sale of an interest in its indirect subsidiary, Crescent Resources, LLC. The Business Court granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss. Curtis v. Barnet, et al (10 CVS 21196 North Carolina Business Court - Mecklenburg County).

Representation of a Big 4 accounting firm in claims asserted by Wachovia shareholders for losses claimed in connection with the financial meltdown and ultimate sale of Wachovia Bank. The North Carolina Business Court granted defendants' motions to dismiss in February 2011, and the North Carolina Court of Appeals affirmed. Browne v. Thompson, et al. (COA 11-852, April 3, 2012).
