Christina S. Hammervold focuses her practice on global corporate, securities and tax matters.  Christina’s clients are both public and private, ranging from Fortune Global 50 companies to high-net-worth individuals and families, as well as the financial services firms that serve these clients.

Family Direct Investing

Christina has significant expertise representing high-net-worth individuals, families, family offices, and the financial services firms that serve these clients, in connection with their global legal needs, including cross-border direct investing activities.  She has broad experience in assisting global private clients in navigating the United States legal system, generally from a corporate and tax perspective, but also with respect to the various other considerations that arise when families move to, or invest in, the United States.  Christina regularly coordinates the advice of practitioners from McGuireWoods’ highly-ranked Corporate, Tax and Private Wealth Services practices to provide global private clients with a broad spectrum of sophisticated legal services as they invest in and operate businesses globally.  She works closely with banking relationship managers, financial planners, and domestic and foreign lawyers to tailor solutions for global private clients’ individual needs.

International Tax Planning

Christina regularly counsels high-net-worth individuals, families, family offices, and trustees on a wide range of international and domestic tax-planning matters.  In executing global direct investing programs for private clients, Christina has extensive experience designing and implementing holistic financial and estate planning structures that solve for global taxation challenges, wealth transfer and succession, asset protection, corporate governance, privacy and family office compliance.  She provides guidance to global private clients (generally located outside the United States) in connection with various reporting obligations arising within and outside the United States, including FATCA, FBARs, income tax reporting, information reporting and various other reporting requirements. 

Global Acquisitions and Divestitures

Christina regularly counsels clients on transactions that touch every corner of the world, including China, India, Central and South America, Europe, and Canada.  She has broad experience assisting her clients in navigating the global landscape and the complex cultural, legal, tax, and business challenges posed by cross-border transactions.  Christina has been active in transactions involving a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, hospitality, chemicals, technology, energy, health care, and real estate.

Private Investment Funds

Christina’s client base includes private investment funds, including private equity managers, venture capital firms, and commodity pool operators.  She has advised fund managers on fund formation, securities offerings, investment advisor registration issues, and SEC and CFTC compliance matters.  Christina has experience dealing with the securities and tax issues that can arise when fund managers desire to accept capital from sources outside of the United States.
