An experienced trial lawyer, former prosecutor and U.S. Marine Corps captain, Knox primarily focuses his practice on energy and complex commercial litigation for the firm. He has served as lead attorney for more than 25 jury trials, and has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts.

Knox represents and counsels clients in a variety of litigation areas with experience in all aspects of both civil and criminal disputes. He has represented a range of local and international clients including: upstream and midstream oil and gas companies, mining companies, retail companies, mortgage companies, manufacturing companies, and oilfield service companies. Knox also works closely with in-house teams to manage cases from initial filing to final judgment. He approaches and prepares every case as if it is going to trial, while at the same time remaining cognizant of his client’s underlying business objectives.

Before joining McGuireWoods, Knox was an associate handling complex commercial and toxic tort litigation for a large Houston-based international law firm. He also prosecuted criminal cases for more than two years as an assistant district attorney for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Houston, Texas. Prior to commencing his legal career, Knox served as an infantry officer and light armored reconnaissance officer for the U.S. Marine Corps, before his honorable discharge as a captain. He completed three combat deployments to Iraq and was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V, a Purple Heart, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals with Combat Vs.

Energy Litigation:

Represented a publicly traded exploration and production company as lead associate in a royalty lawsuit dealing with gas royalties and the deductibility of post-production costs.

Represented a publicly traded oilfield service company as lead associate in nuisance lawsuit related to hydraulic fracking.

Represented a publicly traded energy company as lead associate in a maritime allision claim against a shipping company that damaged a refinery dock.

Defense of a publicly traded steel company as lead associate in a breach of contract/breach of warranty/products liability case involving casing materials on a well site, obtaining a non-suit from Plaintiff.

Represented an oilfield equipment  manufacturer as lead associate in a breach of warranty / breach of contract case.

Represented a national oilfield service company as lead counsel in a mineral lien case against a publicly traded energy company.

Commercial Litigation:

Defense of a publicly traded tire manufacturer as lead associate in a breach of contract case involving a contract to sell large mining tires in Russia.

Represented a local clothing apparel company as lead attorney in a breach of contract case against manufacturer of apparel, obtaining a six figure verdict following a two day jury trial in Harris County, Texas.

Defense of a local commercial landlord as lead associate in a trade infringement case involving the sale of counterfeit luxury items.

Labor / Employment:

Represented an oilfield service company and employee in a non-compete lawsuit against a publicly traded service company.

Represented a national bank and employee in a non-compete lawsuit against a former employer.

Toxic Tort:

Defense of a publicly traded waste management company as lead associate in an enforcement action brought by Harris County. The defense was  called “one of the greatest defense victories in Texas history” by The Texas Lawbook (November 14, 2014).

Defense of a publicly traded waste management company as lead associate in a toxic tort brought by landowners for legacy contamination.

Defense of a publicly traded waste management company as lead associate in a toxic tort brought by Galveston Bay commercial fishermen for contamination of shrimp and oyster catches.

Personal Injury:

Defense of a publicly traded restaurant chain as lead attorney  in a personal injury case, obtaining  a no-liability summary judgment.

Defense of a national electronics store as lead attorney in a personal injury case, obtaining a no-liability summary judgment.

Defense of a national electronics store as lead attorney in a breach of warranty/ breach of contract case, obtaining a jury verdict of no liability in Tarrant County, Texas.

Pro-Bono:

Represented a Texas death row inmate on his federal appeal. Presented oral argument to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in November of 2016.
