Data Protection Live – Data Privacy and Security Lessons from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games presented a unique opportunity to put into practice data protection and privacy compliance that was immediately testable, practical, responsive and integrated. In many other organisations compliance is never put to the test in such a public way. The eyes of the world were on London, and so compliance had to be seamless, yet also enabling, robust and adaptable. After an introduction to the scale of the Games in terms of data and information, Wayne dealt with a number of the key challenges that faced the Organising Committee and discuss responses. They were divided into four categories:
- Organise (Blending expertise, people structures, databases and international issues)
- Communicate (Part of key communication channels, special access rights to systems and workflow management)
- React (Contractors, data breach response and press analysis)
- Ending Well (Legacy retention versus data destruction)
The focus of the presentation and discussion was on security as the key driver, the complexities of database information and locations, the advantages of blended expertise, contractor management, data breach response and the realities of data destruction and retention.
