UNAIDS Roundtable

Time for Action: Making HIV Medicines Accessible for Patients from Developing Countries

October 29, 2009

McGuireWoods partner Paul Van den Bulck (Intellectual Property and Life Sciences, Brussels) spoke at a roundtable on Oct. 29, 2009, on "Time for Action: Making HIV Medicines Accessible for Patients from Developing Countries," hosted by UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS.

McGuireWoods participated in the forum for UNITAID, the international drug purchasing facility, that has undertaken first steps to create a voluntary patent pool for AIDS medicines for developing countries.

This event presented the UNITAID patent pool to relevant stakeholders (the European Commission, UNITAID, MSF, EATG, and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry) and other interested parties. It provided an opportunity to explore next steps and engage stakeholders in a constructive dialogue at an early stage. Based on the discussion’s results, UNAIDS will publish a comprehensive article on its homepage, unaids.org.
