Executive Director Bob Couture Pens Law Firm Strategy Article for Harvard Law’s The Practice

May 30, 2017

McGuireWoods executive director Robert Couture published the lead article titled “Postrecession Strategies” in the May 2017 issue of The Practice, a publication of Harvard Law School’s Center on the Legal Profession (CLP). The feature article suggests that segmentation of the legal market is a critical foundation to successful strategic planning, and provides a way for law firms to assess their current position and make choices about where they want to compete.

Couture also addressed how the emergence of new competitors, such as the Big Four accountancy networks and virtual law firms, may necessitate new business strategies for traditional law firms. He noted, “[T]he critical takeaway is, if you were running a law firm, in which areas would you want to compete and how would you get there?”

Last September, Couture gave a lecture at Harvard Law’s CLP titled “Big Law: Strategic Positioning for Tomorrow’s Legal Landscape.” The CLP is the “leading research center on the evolving global legal profession.”
