Pittsburgh associate Maria Sasinoski was quoted in a July 3 Bloomberg Law story on a new South Carolina law requiring the state’s insurers to develop a comprehensive information security program to protect customer data.
South Carolina is the first state to enact cybersecurity legislation for the insurance industry. But, Sasinoski told Bloomberg, “We know that other states have introduced similar legislation, and cybersecurity has become an evolving threat for all industries.”
She added that insurance industry groups have raised concerns about having a patchwork of laws that differ from state to state and would prefer “clear guidelines as to what they need to do.”
Sasinoski recently wrote an overview of the South Carolina law on the firm’s Password Protected blog.
