John Thompson Featured in Corporate Counsel Business Journal Q&A

December 19, 2019

McGuireWoods Washington, D.C., partner John H. Thompson was featured in a Q&A in the November-December issue of the Corporate Counsel Business Journal, in which he discussed his military background, how it influences his work as a lawyer, his role advancing the HAVEN Act, the firm’s pro bono work to assist veterans, and more.

Regarding his military service, Thompson pointed to “the core values and leadership principles” that guided him carrying over to his work practicing law.

He highlighted how McGuireWoods’ Veterans Lawyers Network (VLN) brings value to the firm and its clients, and how it offers opportunities for the firm’s lawyers to provide much-needed pro bono and community service projects to active duty military, veterans and their families.

“Corporate clients are eager to provide in-house legal resources to help veterans and their families in the communities they serve,” said Thompson, VLN chair. “That shared commitment also enhances our relationships with our clients.”

Thompson played a key role in raising awareness of the need for the HAVEN Act, which helps military veterans shield disability and other Veterans Administration benefits during bankruptcy proceedings and placing veterans on equal footing with civilian recipients of Social Security benefits under the Bankruptcy Code.
