MedCity News Quotes Timothy Fry on Changes to Stark Law Regulations

December 9, 2020

MedCity News interviewed McGuireWoods healthcare associate Timothy Fry for a Nov. 25, 2020, story on regulatory changes to the Physician Self-Referral Law— also known as the Stark Law — that are designed to ease administrative burdens for providers.

The changes approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will take effect Jan. 19, 2021. The reforms are expected to make it easier for hospitals and physician groups to comply with the Stark Law and provide them with greater flexibility as they move toward value-based care, MedCity News reported.

“We’re still digesting the 600-plus pages that [CMS] put out,” Fry said. “But some of our initial feelings and views are that the final rule is going to be helpful in reducing some of those questions [we get from clients], providing more clarity and hopefully allowing the industry to avoid things that CMS thinks is improper.”

Fry and partner Gretchen Heinze Townshend, both based in the firm’s Chicago office, outlined key changes to the Stark Law, the federal Anti-Kickback Statute and the Civil Monetary Penalties Law in a Nov. 23, 2020, client alert.
