Julie Letwat Quoted in The Detroit News on Medical Ventilator Production

March 20, 2020

The Detroit News quoted McGuireWoods healthcare counsel Julie Letwat in a March 19, 2020, story that explored the possibility of U.S. automakers producing medical ventilators at their plants to help manage the coronavirus pandemic.

While the crisis has led to unprecedented demand for the devices, Letwat explained that many hospitals have been holding off on ordering additional ventilators because of the cost of the equipment.

“It’s not something the hospitals have the finances to order as this is a short-term need for them,” said Letwat, a member of the firm’s COVID-19 Response Team. “The orders that are coming in are not coming from the United States. That could change.”

Letwat previously addressed the issue of ventilator shortages in a March 18 story in The Washington Post.
