The Los Angeles Times Quotes Julie Letwat on Ventilator Production

March 23, 2020

The Los Angeles Times quoted McGuireWoods healthcare counsel Julie Letwat in a March 23, 2020, story on efforts to ramp up production of medical ventilators in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The story focuses on efforts by California companies to use their supply chains to address shortages of ventilators and other critical medical supplies during the crisis. Letwat, a member of the firm’s COVID-19 Response Team, cautioned that companies already accustomed to manufacturing the machines will need 90 to 100 days to increase their production capacity. Companies such as automakers that have offered to build ventilators need even more lead time, she said.

“These are complex machines,” Letwat said. “This isn’t ordering gloves and masks.”

Letwat previously addressed the issue of ventilator shortages in stories published by The Washington Post and The Detroit News.
