George Keith Martin, the managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Richmond office, was one of four community leaders selected to receive the Jasper Trailblazer Award on Feb. 15 from Richmond’s Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. The awards were presented as part of the church’s Founder’s Day celebration.
Also honored were Judge James R. Spencer of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and his wife, retired Richmond Circuit Court Judge Margaret P. Spencer, as well as Angela Patton, the CEO of Girls for a Change and founder of Camp Diva.
Martin practices construction, commercial real estate and local government law and has been involved in firm leadership throughout his career. He also served in important leadership posts in the legal profession and in higher education. Martin served for a decade on the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners. He was appointed to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors in 2011 and began a two-year term as the board’s rector in 2013.
The Jasper Trailblazer award was established to honor Mount Zion’s founder, the Rev. John Jasper, a former slave who founded the church in an abandoned Confederate stable in 1867. The award recognizes individuals for groundbreaking achievements.
