Four lawyers from McGuireWoods’ Pittsburgh office have been named Pennsylvania “Super Lawyers” for 2015, and four of the firm’s lawyers have been named Pennsylvania Super Lawyers “Rising Stars.” The lawyer rating service Super Lawyers will publish this year’s survey findings in its Pennsylvania Super Lawyers magazine, as well as in the June 2015 issue of Pittsburgh Magazine.
McGuireWoods’ 2015 Pennsylvania “Super Lawyers”:
- Mark E. Freedlander, Bankruptcy: Business. Freedlander has represented financially distressed companies, lenders, vendors and acquirers of assets in numerous distressed transactions. In court supervised proceedings, he has represented debtors, Chapter 11 trustees, liquidating trustees, Chapter 11 plan sponsors, lenders, creditor committees, individual creditor interests and acquirers of assets.
- Leonard J. Marsico, Business Litigation. The chair of McGuireWoods’ Complex Commercial Litigation Department and head of the firm’s coal industry team, Marsico handles cases involving energy, transactional, securities, insurance coverage, corporate control and general corporate matters. He coordinates a cross-departmental group of attorneys who provide integrated, coal-related legal services to coal producers, coal transporters, utilities and service providers to the coal industry.
- Michael J. Roeschenthaler, Bankruptcy: Business. Roeschenthaler has a wide range of experience representing various stakeholders in financially distressed situations, including corporate debtors, asset acquirers, equity holders, ad hoc and court-appointed committees, and individual creditors. His industry experience includes mining (coal, natural gas and copper), manufacturing, metals, hospitality, food and beverage, retail, commercial real estate, automotive and construction.
- Paul K. Stockman, Environmental Litigation. Stockman has a broad-based complex trial and appellate litigation practice, with substantial focus on insurance coverage, environmental, appellate, tort and commercial disputes. He has substantial experience representing industrial clients in a variety of environmental disputes, including actions under CERCLA, RCRA, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and analogous state environmental laws.
Pennsylvania Super Lawyers “Rising Stars” recognizes top up-and-coming lawyers who are 40 years old or younger, or who have been practicing 10 or fewer years.

- Bryan C. Brantley, Personal Injury – Products: Defense. Brantley has represented clients in product liability claims across the country in a wide range of industries, with a particular focus on transportation, construction equipment manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. He also has worked on numerous issues involving federal preemption of state law claims related to the labeling of prescription drugs and has actively participated and assisted in the handling of a variety of pharmaceutical litigation.
- Anthony J. Carna, Energy and Natural Resources. Carna focuses his practice on the areas of oil and gas law and construction law. He regularly represents oil and gas exploration and production companies, pipeline companies, coal companies and other energy industry clients in connection with the acquisition and disposition of oil and gas interests, oil and gas related assets, midstream related assets and real property interests.
- Matthew D. Monsour, Business Litigation. Monsour’s experience includes first chairing federal court trials, drafting and arguing dispositive motions, preparing and deposing witnesses, counseling clients in ways to successfully avoid litigation, and advising clients on large land transactions and private equity purchases. He also serves as national coordinating counsel for a major transportation company.
- Ryan T. Purpura, Energy and Natural Resources. Purpura has significant experience with mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, securities, and general corporate law, especially related to the oil and gas industry. He frequently lectures on topics related to the oil and gas industry in the Appalachian Basin.
