McGuireWoods Partners Spivey, Terwilliger Named National Law Journal Litigation Trailblazers

December 8, 2016

McGuireWoods partners Angela M. Spivey and George J. Terwilliger III are among the distinguished practitioners featured on The National Law Journal’s 2016 Litigation Trailblazers list.

Spivey is managing partner of the firm’s Atlanta office and a leader of the firm’s 90-lawyer food and beverage industry team, which earned a nationwide ranking in the 2016 edition of “Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.” Co-author of the treatise Food Safety Law, published by American Lawyer Media, Spivey has defended clients in various industries in class action litigations, including Conagra Brands in some of the most closely watched food labeling cases. She also has represented clients in food recalls, environmental litigation and one of the first atypical fuel distribution cases in which class certification was denied.

Terwilliger, one of Washington’s most sought-after white collar lawyers, leads McGuireWoods’ Strategic Risk and Crisis Management practice group. He has represented international companies in high-stakes litigation and led corporate compliance reviews and internal investigations in more than 60 countries and played important roles in historic cases. In 2000, he led George W. Bush’s legal team in the Florida election recount, which the U.S. Supreme Court settled in a 5-4 ruling that made Bush president. He also served as deputy U.S. attorney general under President George H.W. Bush.

Terwilliger currently leads a McGuireWoods team in an independent review of the Chicago Internal Police Review Authority’s responses to police-involved shootings and represents former Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois in a federal probe of his political and office spending.

“Angela and George are highly respected litigators who are trusted by clients to handle high-profile and high-stakes matters,” said J. Tracy Walker IV, the firm’s deputy managing partner for litigation. “They are leaders in their field and we’re delighted that they have received this well-deserved recognition from The National Law Journal.”

Respected, independent authorities have repeatedly recognized McGuireWoods for its litigation prowess. The firm recently was included among a select group for outstanding domestic and international litigation in Law360’s inaugural “Litigation Powerhouse” rankings. The firm was honored for work in a range of practice areas, including government investigations and white collar, product liability and commercial litigation. In addition, Chambers USA and Chambers UK rank the firm’s litigation practice and lawyers as leaders in the field.
