The Jacksonville Business Journal has chosen McGuireWoods partner Scott Cairns for its 2017 “Ultimate Attorneys” list, recognizing him for pro bono work assisting northeastern Florida’s top service provider to the homeless.

The publication honored Cairns and 20 others at a March 8 awards banquet and profiles of each appeared in the Business Journal’s March 10 issue. Cairns was one of only two lawyers recognized in the pro bono category.

Cairns leads a team of McGuireWoods lawyers advising Jacksonville’s Sulzbacher Center on multiple transactions involving the development of its second campus for homeless women and families. The facility will include a pediatric clinic and a therapeutic learning center.

Cairns co-leads McGuireWoods’ Transportation Industry Team and represents clients in high-stakes litigation and appeals across the country. Cairns formerly served on the firm’s Board of Partners and as the Jacksonville office’s managing partner. He also helped develop McGuireWoods’ international practices and advised clients in cross-border matters when he worked in the firm’s London office.

Among his many accolades throughout his more than 30-year career, Best Lawyers in America recognized Cairns as Jacksonville’s 2017 “Lawyer of the Year” for labor and employment litigation and Chambers & Partners’ Global Guide ranked him as a “Leader in the Field” for employment and litigation.

“Bringing a legal perspective to the community boards on which I serve is deeply rewarding,” said Cairns, a member of the Sulzbacher Center Board of Directors and its Revenue Development Task Force. “I am honored to receive this award.”

The center designated McGuireWoods its 2016 Corporate Partner of the Year, recognizing the firm’s pro bono team. Besides Cairns, it includes Jacksonville office managing partner Eric Bilik, partners Chris Thanner and Beth Rothenberg, counsel Lisa Purvis and Kelly Hellmuth, associate Kristen Courtney and additional firm lawyers and staff.
