Chris Alderman focuses his practice on advising utilities, project sponsors, investors, and lenders in the development and financing of domestic and international energy and infrastructure projects. He also has experience in project finance, specifically in the area of public-private partnerships, as well as advising on corporate matters, including joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and energy regulatory filings and proceedings.

Chris has helped lead projects in various stages of development from initial bid, through financial close and into commercial operation. In addition, he has extensive experience on the “front end” of energy, infrastructure, and transportation projects such as smart city technology, renewable energy facilities, and power plants, including drafting and negotiating power purchase agreements (PPAs), engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and other construction contracts, long-term supply agreements, tolling agreements, equipment purchases, and operation and maintenance (O&M) agreements.

Prior to practicing law, Chris served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps, where he served two tours in Afghanistan.

Experience

  • Representation of a large utility in the development and negotiation of its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for its regulated utility-scale solar energy generation fleet, totaling over $600 million and 400MW of energy.
  • Representation of a large utility in the drafting and negotiation of construction and supply contracts for the development of a 2,600 MW offshore wind project located off the coast of Virginia.
  • Representation of an American energy company in the development of RFPs, evaluation of bids, and negotiation of EPC, installation and procurement contracts for subsequent license renewal upgrade projects at nuclear generating facilities.
  • Representation of a utility in the development and negotiation of its EPC contracts for battery energy storage systems.
  • Representation of an energy company in the development and negotiation of its supply and design and construction contracts for renewable natural gas facilities.
  • Representation of an American energy company in the development and negotiation of the EPC contracts for two liquefied natural gas facilities to be developed in Virginia and North Carolina.
  • Representation of a state in the acquisition of right-of-way from a freight rail common carrier worth $500 million as part of its passenger rail enhancement project.
  • Representation of a government agency in its procurement of a design-build-finance-operate-maintain concession for the conversion of its street light network to LED technology and the deployment of smart city technology.
  • Representation of a state transportation department in its procurement for the development of a fiber optic network along interstate highways.
  • Representation of a Fortune 500 company in the procurement of over 100 MW of renewable energy via a virtual power purchase agreement.
  • Representation of a consortium in the bid and negotiation for a 50-year concession for the operation and maintenance of a university utility system. 
  • Representation of a foreign country on the development of a 2,460 MW coal-fired power plant. 
  • Representation of an independent power producer on regulatory approvals for over 800 MW of solar energy with the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
