Jeremy S. Byrum Partner

Jeremy focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense, internal corporate investigations and False Claims Act (FCA) litigation. He has represented corporate and individual clients in numerous government investigations and indictments involving allegations of export control violations, healthcare fraud, financial fraud, bribery, identity theft, immigration violations, unfair trade practices, malfeasance in office, and violations of congressional ethics rules.

He frequently defends clients in civil litigation under the FCA, including actions brought by qui tam plaintiffs. In addition, his practice includes general commercial litigation. 

Jeremy was a law clerk to the Honorable Robert E. Payne of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2005 to 2006.

Experience

Representation of former chief lending officer of a bank in a federal criminal bank fraud case. After a 10 week jury trial, our client was acquitted on all counts.

Representation of Virginia Tech and various officers in a wrongful death action that arose from the mass shooting on campus in 2007, which resulted in the Supreme Court of Virginia entering judgment in favor of our clients.

Defense of hospital in two lawsuits asserting civil claims under the FCA and RICO based on alleged Medicare fraud. The district courts dismissed the claims against our client in both cases, which were later upheld on appeal.

Representation of multinational bank in FCA litigation brought against its student lending subsidiary for allegedly paying illegal inducements to obtain consolidation loans. The district court granted our client’s motion to dismiss, which was affirmed on appeal.

Defense of food service management company in FCA litigation for allegedly defrauding the National School Lunch Program. The claims against our client were dismissed by the district court, which was upheld on appeal.

Representation of industrial and defense manufacturer in global export control audit.

Representation of automobile manufacturer in international FCPA investigation.

Defense of consultant against federal criminal charges for allegedly bribing a government official in connection with a government contract. The jury acquitted our client of all charges.
