Tennille J. Checkovich Partner

Tennille is a litigator and a member of the firm's appeals and issues and class action practice teams. She focuses her practice on general and bankruptcy-related appellate matters, multi-jurisdictional litigation, and mass and class actions involving products liability, toxic tort, and environmental claims.

She handles cases on appeal and at the trial level in state and federal courts throughout the country. Most recently, Tennille has been representing an entity seeking certification of a defendant class in mortgage-related litigation in federal court in Nevada, coordinating and litigating the defense of over 500 agricultural nuisance claims pending in 26 cases in federal court in North Carolina, and arguing a prisoner’s rights appeal asserting violations of the Fourth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments in the Fourth Circuit.

In addition, Tennille has handled securities and derivative litigation and numerous commercial torts and contract and business disputes. She also conducts litigation monitoring to address appellate and business concerns and advises corporations concerning compliance with federal and state statutes as well as investigations and enforcement actions by state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Tennille is the Co-chair of the firm’s Richmond Office Pro Bono Committee. She clerked for the Honorable Barbara S. Jones, U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York, from 2001 to 2002. She was a Jefferson Scholar at the University of Virginia, where she lived on the Lawn during her Fourth Year.


Defense of global agricultural corporation in private nuisance litigation involving nearly 300 cases pending in nine jurisdictions in Missouri, including multiple trials in urban and rural jurisdictions and appeals to the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Missouri. Second chair in one three-week jury trial in Kansas City that resulted in a full defense verdict subsequently upheld on appeal.

Representation of debtor corporation, parent entities, and plan administrator in numerous bankruptcy-related appeals in the Southern District of Texas and the Fifth Circuit. Oral argument in one case before the Fifth Circuit included a question of first impression under the Bankruptcy Code. A second case involved novel jurisdictional and LMRA issues.

Representation of cleaning services corporation in appeal of $5 million adverse jury verdict in a negligence case to the Virginia Supreme Court, which reversed the jury verdict in its entirety.

Representation of automotive manufacturer in appeals and appellate issues at the trial level in nationwide asbestos litigation.

Representation of locality in five appeals of terminations of parental rights before the Virginia Court of Appeals. All trial court decisions in favor of the locality were affirmed.

Representation of various third parties in amicus briefing in several federal circuit courts.

Representation of pro bono juvenile clients in criminal matters before various circuit and juvenile and domestic relations courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
