Liz represents companies and individuals across a variety of industries including financial institutions, energy, and transportation industries in government and internal investigations, civil litigation and white collar defense. Her practice spans investigations and enforcement actions by government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”), Federal Bureau of Investigation, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), state attorneys general and state prosecutors. Her practice also includes representing companies in connection with regulatory, civil, and criminal enforcement actions arising from U.S. anti-money laundering (“AML”) laws and regulations.

Liz is a member of the firm’s Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department, which was recognized by Law360 as a Practice Group of the Year. She performs confidential internal investigations and advises clients on the risks of criminal prosecution and regulatory enforcement actions. She also conducts interviews in connection with investigations into alleged sales practices issues, securities fraud, quid pro quo schemes, and other financial misconduct.

Before joining McGuireWoods, Liz clerked for U.S. Magistrate Judge David J. Novak of the Eastern District of Virginia participating in settlement conferences across all areas of complex civil litigation, including antitrust, constitutional, contractual, and consumer protection claims. She also interned for U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson of the Eastern District of Virginia and Judge Marla G. Decker of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

During law school, Liz was a John Marshall Scholar and served as an articles and comments editor for the University of Richmond Law Review and as chancellor of the Walter Scott McNeill Law Society.

Liz worked as a deputy clerk in the Henrico County General District Court from 2008-2013.

 

Experience

  • Represented multi-national building products company in connection with multiple simultaneous criminal antitrust investigations as well as connected civil litigation.
  • Represented major energy company in investigations and enforcement actions advanced by state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the SEC.
  • Defended large telecommunications company against alleged violations of the FCA in connection with national economic stimulus grant to expand broadband fiber networks.
  • Represented major financial institution in enforcement actions by the OCC related to sales practices.
  • Represented large, publicly traded company in responding to inquiries from the Department of Justice and FinCEN.
  • Represented national political organization in multiple, simultaneous lawsuits in federal and state court to ensure the integrity and constitutionality of the electoral process in a federal election.
  • Represented current and former executives throughout federal investigations into alleged misconduct, including antitrust violations and fraud.
  • Advised pharmaceutical company on the fiduciary duties of directors and officers to the corporation and shareholders in connection with significant corporate transactions.
  • Advised companies on legal, ethical, and compliance considerations related to the role of in-house counsel, attorney client privilege, and the work product doctrine.
  • Prepared for and participated in dozens of court-ordered settlement conferences while clerking for U.S. Magistrate Judge David J. Novak.
  • Managed extensive e-discovery processes, including in defense of a large telecommunications company in a qui tam action brought by a relator pursuant to the False Claims Act.
