Laws, regulations and customs change from state to state and country to country, but the unifying core of McGuireWoods’ culture does not.
As a firm, our core values guide our work and define our firm as a responsible, ethical citizen of the global business world and human community. Our values inspire us to serve all clients, each other and the communities in which we live and work with pride and integrity.
The unifying commitment to service is McGuireWoods’ foundation, but we want our lawyers and staff to participate in the individual or office-based causes about which they feel passionately. Volunteers from every office around the world participate in local, community-based philanthropic events and organizations. We volunteer and offer financial support for victims of natural disaster, and serious illnesses such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Muscular Dystrophy, diabetes, terminal childhood illness and countless others.
We also want to make a difference in addressing serious social and humanitarian ills such as domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, lack of quality education, national tragedies and war. Just a few examples include:
Sisters Place provides housing and support programs for homeless, single-parent families.
Through Richmond Renaissance, McGuireWoods has contributed countless hours of free legal time to assist with the revitalization of downtown Richmond, Virginia. One of our lawyers served as chairman of Richmond Renaissance and continues to serve on its Executive Committee. As one of its priority projects, Richmond Renaissance has undertaken the redevelopment of Jackson Ward, an historically African-American neighborhood.
Southside Housing and Community Development Corporation (SHCD)
One of our lawyers helped SHCD obtain its tax-exempt status and served on the initial board, and another currently serves on the SHCD board and as corporate secretary. SHCD has helped rebuild a blighted, predominantly minority area, and has received recognition from the city for its outstanding efforts.
Better Housing Coalition
McGuireWoods has provided pro bono legal services to the Better Housing Coalition, a community development corporation organized to provide affordable housing. Members of McGuireWoods’ real estate group served on this project.
Local outreach programs serve as a ministry to public housing communities and provide a variety of social services, medical clinics, and free food to residents. In these endeavors, our firm builds strong relationships with respective cities that afford ongoing opportunities to assist the community.
