McGuireWoods has unique and extensive experience in both unconventional and conventional natural gas markets. Our practice includes gas-related transaction, taxation, and litigation work, and we offer consulting and lobbying services through McGuireWoods’ full-service public affairs subsidiary, McGuireWoods Consulting LLC.

The level of McGuireWoods’ presence in this market has afforded our lawyers access to the trenches for exploration, production, midstream, transportation and environmental work. We have offices in the key gas production states of California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia, as well as experienced attorneys licensed in West Virginia, Indiana and Ohio. We bring the firm’s collective resources to bear wherever our clients do business.

Our current clients are engaged in upstream, midstream and downstream markets, and include major oil and gas companies, and large and small independent producers involved in exploration and production. Similarly, we have experience with key aspects of the ownership, operation, regulation and taxation of natural gas pipelines and distribution companies, including the construction, permitting and operation of gas transmission and gathering facilities. We have also developed a concentration in matters related to low-pressure distribution lines, compressor stations and storage facilities.

As with natural gas, in the petroleum industry, our lawyers have represented clients in upstream, midstream and downstream markets, including major oil companies and large and small independent producers in exploration and production matters, including environmental and other permitting issues. We are also highly experienced in the acquisition and disposition of petroleum pipelines and associated facilities, financing and tax structuring of production activities, and in the offering and sale of interests in such activities as part of the financing process. As outside general counsel for a large independent petroleum refiner and marketer, we have handled a variety of financial, litigation and environmental matters involving refineries, product distribution networks and retail outlets.

Served as local counsel for Plantation Pipe Line Co.

Served as local counsel for Plantation Pipe Line Co. in an appeals case with the Texas Supreme Court. The Court refused to hear an appeal of a lower-court ruling which held that Plantation Pipe Line Co. did not forfeit coverage under an excess insurance policy when it settled claims with primary insurers over a 1975 oil leak in North Carolina. The high court’s refusal to take the case upholds Plantation’s 2014 victory in the Court of Appeals for the 11th District of Texas, a decision which bucked a national trend favoring insurance carriers on this issue.
