Partner Mebs Dossa Discusses UK Data Transfers in Compliance Week

June 15, 2021

McGuireWoods London partner Mebs Dossa was quoted in a June 3, 2021, Compliance Week article on European Union probes into whether tech giants could still access European Union data meant to be protected.

The EU has been looking into whether some cloud-based services infringe on privacy rules. The European Data Protection Supervisor, which oversees compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation in the EU, recently opened two investigations into two companies over concerns EU data that should be protected could still be accessed through cloud services, which is against the GDPR.

The United States and EU are still working to come to terms on a data privacy agreement after the Privacy Shield was struck down in July 2020. The United Kingdom is trying to figure out its approach to privacy and data transfers.

Dossa said the UK has indicated it wants to take a new approach to international data transfers now that it is outside the EU.

“It seems likely the UK will start making its own adequacy decisions and devising its own data transfer mechanisms before the end of this year,” he said.
