Cori is a litigator who focuses on patent, intellectual property, and complex commercial litigation. Cori uses her technical background and judicial experience to counsel and assist her clients in technology-based matters.

Early in her career, Cori has already acquired significant courtroom and trial experience and has experience in in-court witness examination, writing dispositive motions and critical briefs, taking and defending depositions, managing discovery, and post-hearing and trial briefing in patent infringement, complex commercial, and civil rights litigation cases. Cori also has appellate experience in both state and federal courts in patent, complex commercial, and constitutional litigation.

Cori has experience representing and counseling clients on an array of intellectual property and commercial matters, including patent litigation, Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) inter partes review proceedings, IP due diligence, trade secret, and technology-based commercial disputes. Cori has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, telecommunications, mobile devices, consumer products, and oil and gas.

Cori also maintains a robust pro bono practice. She was part of the trial and appellate team for Valentine v. Collier, which obtained the first permanent injunction during the COVID-19 pandemic securing protective measures and testing for elderly inmates in Texas. During trial, Cori took a key role in conducting the direct examination of the inmates’ primary medical expert witness. In addition, Cori has represented, counseled, and advised pro bono clients on a variety of legal issues including affirmative and defensive asylum matters, veterans’ issues, family, housing, and estate planning matters, and the representation of students with disabilities.

Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Cori completed judicial internships with Judge Jimmie V. Reyna of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and with Chief Judge Susan G. Braden of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.

  • Represented a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in Hatch-Waxman Litigation regarding client’s ANDA to make a generic version of Restasis®, indicated for dry eye treatment (E.D. Tex.).
  • Represented generic pharmaceutical manufacturers in Hatch-Waxman litigations relating to client’s ANDA to make a generic version of opioid dependence drugs, including the sublingual strip Suboxone® (buprenorphine and naloxone) (D. Del., D.N.J.).
  • Represented generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in Hatch-Waxman litigation regarding client’s ANDA to make a generic version of the drug Dificid® (fidaxomicin), indicated for the treatment of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) (D.N.J.).

  • Represented a major oilfield services (OFS) supplier in a trade secret litigation in federal court in Houston and successfully obtained early dismissal through federal copyright and patent preemption rulings (S.D. Tex.).

  • Represented consumer goods manufacturer in Lanham Act, defamation, and unfair competition litigation (N.D. Cal.).

Complex Commercial Litigation & Arbitration

  • Represented a major OFS supplier in a $200 million-plus dispute regarding the operation of deep-water safety valves in the Southern District of Texas and obtained successful judgment after trial (S.D. Tex., 5th Cir.).
  • Represented gas utility in multimillion-dollar mass tort dispute in North Carolina state court (Durham County Superior Court).
  • Represented financial institution in Federal Credit Reporting Act litigation in District of New Jersey (D.N.J.).
  • Represented an OFS supplier in a multimillion-dollar oilfield equipment contract dispute in Texas state court and argued and obtained full summary judgment (Harris County, Texas District Court).
  • Represented an OFS supplier in a multimillion-dollar contract dispute concerning seismic equipment in a Houston-based arbitration and obtained a successful result (AAA).

Appeals

  • (U.S.) – Submitted certiorari-stage amicus brief on behalf of biosimilar company in
    Teva Pharm. USA, Inc. v. GlaxoSmithKline, LLC, No. 22-37 (2022).
  • (U.S.), (5th Cir.) – Acted as counsel in multiple applications to the U.S. Supreme Court in connection with stays of injunctions and was a key contributor to merits briefing before the Fifth Circuit (Valentine v. Collier, 140 S.Ct. 1598 (2020)).
  • (5th Cir.) – Successfully defended a trial court judgment in favor of a major OFS supplier in a major contractual dispute regarding the operation of deep-water safety valves in the Gulf of Mexico and the proper application of certain American Petroleum Institute standards (Hess Corp. v. Schlumberger Tech. Corp., 26 F.4th 229 (5th Cir. 2022)).
  • (Tex. App.—Eastland) – Successfully defended the trial court’s dismissal of all claims in an environmental action against an OFS client following mandamus from the court of appeals compelling the dismissal based on the law-of-the-case doctrine.
  • (5th Cir.) – Obtained favorable rulings from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in a constitutional law case by serving as a key contributor to preliminary injunction stay and merits briefing.
  • (Tex. App.—Eastland) – Obtained mandamus from the Eleventh District Court of Appeals on behalf of a major OFS company, resulting in the complete dismissal of a large environmental action.
  • (Fed. Cir.) – Acted as counsel and briefed appeal from judgment of Delaware district court judge on behalf of a generic pharmaceutical company challenging a finding of infringement.
