The Dec. 4 article “Food Industry Turns To Online Labels To Thwart GMO Suits” discusses the Grocery Manufacturers Association’s recently announced online labeling system, which allows consumers to access information uploaded by food companies about their products, including whether they contain genetically engineered ingredients.
In quoted material, McGuireWoods partner Jim Neale notes that having online labels available to customers may prove beneficial to companies facing labeling claims in court. He also predicts two conflicting views on the subject: Companies may say online labeling provides customers access to more information than would fit on a paper label, while critics may claim companies are using the system to distance necessary information from consumers.
