Law360 Profiles McGuireWoods as a Banking Practice Group of the Year

January 29, 2019

Law360 featured McGuireWoods as a top firm for banking and finance law and litigation in a Jan. 24 article as part of the publication’s Banking Practice Group of the Year series. The story noted McGuireWoods’ representation of national banks and other financial institutions in multibillion-dollar financings and deals and high-stakes appellate wins.

In the article, Law360 highlighted McGuireWoods’ representation of Park Sterling Corp. in its $690 million merger with South State Corp. “that created a combined entity that operates more than 180 bank branches in the southeastern U.S.”

McGuireWoods partner Chris Scheurer, who led the deal team representing Park Sterling, attributed the deal’s success to a multidisciplinary group of McGuireWoods lawyers who collaborated through the firm’s financial institutions industry team (FIIT). The story highlighted the steady growth of McGuireWoods’ FIIT, which includes a deep bench of financial services litigators, one of the largest debt finance practices with more than 90 lawyers, and a broad mix of corporate and regulatory lawyers who work together across practices, throughout the United States and in London to serve clients.

McGuireWoods partners Susan Rodriguez and Rick Viola, who co-chair FIIT, noted the success of McGuireWoods’ industry team approach to client service. They singled out “class action litigation, government investigations, compliance, and fintech” as key focuses for the firm and its clients, particularly in the “broker-dealer industry, alternative lender and private equity” sectors.

Rodriguez added, “Even our traditional institutions are seeing that they want to innovate in what banking is, and we have to be able to respond to that on the front end with new product development, and on the back end with whatever litigation may come.”
