Jim Neale and Benjamin Abel Contribute Two Chapters to ABA’s Guide to Food Law

September 23, 2021

McGuireWoods partner James Neale and associate Benjamin Abel contributed two chapters to the American Bar Association Section of Science & Technology Law’s “Food Law: A Practical Guide,” published on Sept. 10, 2021. In the 232-page guide to how various legal practices intersect with food, Neale and Abel focused on food safety and food recalls.

“[Food] producers and retailers face an array of compliance obligations, especially as they operate in an increasingly inter-connected, globalized world,” the ABA stated. “For readers new to the field of food law in its many forms, this Practical Guide aims to provide an overview of what lawyers actually do to assist food and beverage clients across various domains of legal practice.”

Neale defends clients in food-related litigation, including foodborne illness cases and labeling claims, as well as counsels food companies on regulatory compliance and litigation avoidance. He advises manufacturers, distributors and retailers on matters related to Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Tax and Trade Bureau compliance. Neale is a co-author of “Food Safety Law,” published by American Lawyer Media.

Abel represents food and beverage clients in litigation, including labeling claims. He advises manufacturers, distributors and retailers on FDA, USDA, and Tax and Trade Bureau compliance matters. Abel articles on food and beverage topics have appeared in industry publications including “Food Dive,” “QSR” and “Food Manufacturing.”
