Bernie McNamee Interviewed By WSJ, Good Morning America on Heat Wave’s Impact on Power Grid

July 25, 2023

On July 24, 2023, McGuireWoods partner Bernie McNamee was quoted in The Wall Street Journal and appeared on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” discussing the impact of the U.S. heat wave on the national power grid.

McNamee, a former member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, cautioned that the extreme temperatures blanketing much of the United States show the need to increase energy production to meet demand.

McNamee, also a McGuireWoods Consulting senior advisor, told The Wall Street Journal, “The grid seems to be holding up OK, and it proves we need all resources for all times of year and all types of weather. Just because one resource is performing well today doesn’t mean it’s going to perform as well tomorrow.”

McNamee noted that one of the reasons the grid is challenged is because of the generation mix: “There is not enough dispatchable generation on the hottest days of the year or the coldest,” he said on “Good Morning America.”
