A prolonged shutdown of the federal government could negatively impact the work U.S. attorneys’ offices, McGuireWoods partner Michael F. Easley Jr. told Raleigh TV news station WTVD ABC 11 in an Oct. 1, 2025, story.
Easley, former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, told ABC 11 that a U.S. attorney’s office has an entire division of civil attorneys who handle cases ranging from environmental enforcement matters to cyber investigations to recovery of assets. Many of them may need to stop working if the shutdown extends past Oct. 17, 2025.
“Many of the functions of those civil divisions can be really important to the fair and appropriate administration of justice in America,” Easley said.
