May 17, 2013

The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), a program of the Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, has named Andy Woltman, an associate in the firm’s Chicago office as one of its “2013 Rising Stars.” According to a news release, Woltman is being honored “in recognition of [his] generosity in providing high quality pro bono services to clients with complex immigration cases.”

Woltman will be honored at a reception on June 21 along with fellow honorees U.S. Senator Dick Durbin for his legislative commitment to immigrant and human rights; AT&T’s legal department for its contribution to ensuring protections for immigrant youth via the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative, and Jones Day partner Brian Murray for his steadfast commitment to justice as a pro bono attorney.

“As a lawyer, there are few better achievements than winning for clients the right to live free like Americans do,” said pro bono partner Scott Oostdyk. “For Andy to be honored as a champion for human rights is a great achievement and one for which we are all proud at McGuireWoods.”

Woltman was recently successful in winning asylum for two Congolese brothers, both victims of political torture. He also spent five years on a pro bono immigration matter for another victim of political persecution who was seeking asylum from Africa’s Republic of Chad.

The Human Rights Awards luncheon is a unique event that brings together more than 700 leading attorneys, legislators, civic leaders and advocates to honor the work of individuals and corporate partners. To learn more about the National Immigration Justice Center, visit www.immigrantjustice.org.
